Despite President Trump’s recent sharp criticism of Vladimir Putin, Russia has emphasized that it is still “working with the US.” In its first official response to Trump’s comments, the Kremlin downplayed the tensions between the two leaders, underlining its commitment to maintaining dialogue.
Dmitry Peskov, a spokesperson for the Kremlin, stated that Russia continues to engage with the US, primarily focusing on building and strengthening bilateral relations. He acknowledged that there were no scheduled calls between Putin and Trump for the week ahead but assured that Putin remains open to discussions “if necessary.”
Trump’s Anger with Putin: A Shift in Tone
Trump’s remarks, which aired on NBC News, marked a significant departure from his previous stance on Russia. In an exclusive interview, the former president expressed his anger and frustration with Putin, particularly over the Russian president’s recent comments about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s credibility. Trump described himself as “very angry” and “pissed off” over Putin’s attacks on Zelensky, adding that he would consider imposing a 50% tariff on countries purchasing Russian oil unless Putin agreed to a ceasefire.

This new tone of criticism towards the Russian leader is a stark contrast to Trump’s previous comments, where he often refrained from directly criticizing Putin while directing most of his ire at Ukraine’s leadership, including Zelensky. However, Trump’s anger was triggered when Putin suggested the possibility of establishing an interim government in Ukraine, under UN support, which could replace Zelensky. Trump responded to this by stating, “New leadership means you’re not gonna have a deal for a long time,” further emphasizing his discontent.
Kremlin’s Response: A Call for Calm
In response to Trump’s comments, Peskov sought to calm tensions, highlighting that while the two countries’ leaders may have disagreements, there is still ongoing work and communication between Russia and the US. Peskov also clarified that some of Trump’s statements in the NBC interview had been “paraphrased” and not entirely accurate. While the Kremlin acknowledged the criticism, it chose not to escalate the situation further.
In the aftermath of Trump’s remarks, Russian media, notably the pro-Kremlin Moskovsky Komsomolets, reflected some of the discontent within Russia regarding Trump’s position. The newspaper criticized the former president for not doing enough to prevent Ukraine from targeting Russian energy infrastructure and suggested that his statements lacked serious follow-through. The editorial concluded that “all agreements on the level of President Trump are only worth a few pennies on market day,” but added that Moscow remains open to negotiations with the US president.
Looking Ahead: A Delicate Balance
The situation between Russia and the US remains delicate. While tensions between Putin and Trump have surfaced, both sides continue to emphasize the importance of diplomacy. The US and Russia have been in discussions for weeks, trying to find a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with the hope of bringing an end to the war. Despite Trump’s harsh criticism, the Kremlin has signaled that it is still willing to engage with the US on this critical issue.
As the world watches closely, the question remains whether this public disagreement will lead to further estrangement between the two countries or if it is just another chapter in a complex relationship, where cooperation and confrontation often coexist.
