On the evening of March 25, 2025, Dharavi residents in Mumbai experienced a terrifying event after more than twenty LPG gas cylinders exploded on a parked truck by the Dharavi bus depot on the Sion-Dharavi Link Road, which bordered the Nature Park. The explosion rippled throughout the vicinity while the light from the blast illuminated the nighttime sky, which created panic among all nearby residents.
The Explosion and Its Cause
Fire erupted in a truck holding many LPG cylinders at 9:50 PM before it occurred. The fire erupted when one gas cylinder started leaking, and this led to the combustion of all neighboring cylinders within the truck. The heat waves produced numerous detonations among more than twenty cylinders in successive chain reactions.
Numerous witnesses scattered at the scene described the situation as a noisy bomb blast chain. The situation became more dangerous because several cylinders escaped through the air, potentially endangering neighboring houses and causing additional property damage. The incident caused no damage to any human being, yet a more populated residential area could have easily transformed this event into a dangerous emergency situation.
A Major Firefighting Effort
When emergency teams responded to the incident, initial responders determined it required a Level-1 response; however, they upgraded it to a Level-2 emergency given the magnitude of the explosion together with its dangerous potential. The fire brigade responded immediately to suppress flames and stop their progression toward surrounding buildings, which had a slum settlement directly in the blast zone.

The emergency response prevented casualties from the fire but resulted in vehicle damages to vehicles left in unauthorized parking areas due to intensive explosions and fire heat. Salim Agwan, who lives in PMGP Colony, recalled the incident to describe explosions that burst like a rapid string of bombs detonating one after another. The entire night sky became visible under brilliant fire illumination as the worried population observed flying cylinders potentially crashing into their houses.
A Fire Caused by Unauthorized Parking
MLA Jyoti Gaikwad from Dharavi explained additional information about the incident to the public. The fire began after an automobile accident that triggered the fire, which was near the fuel cylinders being transported. A fire ignited the truck because it occupied a restricted no-parking zone, thus causing the trapped cylinders to explode. The hazardous exploding cylinders emerged from unbelievably improper parking activities, according to Gaikwad.
The emergency responders successfully managed the situation to stop it from worsening after nobody suffered fatal injuries in the event. Gaikwad notified the population that they must monitor parking regulations and maintain suitable control procedures for hazardous materials such as LPG cylinders.
The Aftermath and Lessons Learned
Situations like these remind us about potential fire risks associated with poor vehicle parking and stress the significance of safety rules compliance. Dharavi residents escaped unharmed in this incident, although the proximity of danger proves how effortlessly such scenarios become destructive when safety protocols are neglected.
The local community stays anxious while authorities determine the fire’s precise origin because residents worry about how one minor oversight could transform into an unsafe catastrophe. Better enforcement of no-parking zones and stricter regulations around flammable material storage and transportation become necessary issues in urban areas after this incident.
